ABOUT US
u3a Movement
u3a stands for the University of the Third Age, which is a self-help organisation for people no longer in full time employment providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment. It consists of local u3as all over the UK, which are run entirely by volunteers. Local u3a's are learning co-operatives which draw upon the knowledge, experience and skills of their own members to organise and provide interest groups in accordance with the wishes of the membership. Between them, they offer the chance to study over 300 different subjects in such fields as art, languages, music, history, life sciences, philosophy, computing, crafts, photography and walking. A typical u3a has about 250 members but could be as small as 12 and as large as 2000+.
The u3a approach to learning is - learning for pleasure. There is no accreditation or validation and there are no assessments or qualifications to be gained.
Today, there are over 1,000 u3a's throughout the United Kingdom with over 425,000 members. It is a fast growing organisation which is a measure of its interest to people of the third age.
Grantown-on-Spey u3a
The Grantown on Spey u3a is part of the u3a in Scotland, which comprises 55 u3a's, and over 9,000 members.
Grantown-on-Spey u3a draws its membership from the town, its surrounding locality and many of the nearby towns and villages. Our nearest neighbouring Groups are in Inverness and The Moray Coast to the north; and in Pitlochry to the south.
Membership currently stands at around 135 members and there are 11 active Interest Groups, which are described under the “Interest Group” tab. If you don't see a group that takes your fancy, consider starting your own group - we are always keen to encourage members to get involved.
All our speaker meetings take place in the afternoon at The Grant Arms Hotel. They run from October through to April. We also hold a Christmas Lunch and a Spring Tea.
We strive to be open minded and welcoming – come along and see!
Newsletter: Grantown u3a produces a monthly newsletter detailing all the events happening within u3a and with other organisations in the area. If you have something that you think should be included, please contact Suzi - [email protected].
Please note that since u3a is a non-political, non-religious organisation, we cannot include events of this nature.
